The Rising World Trade Center Memorial in Westchester
The Journal News reports that the cost of the Westchester 911 Memorial has risen from $200,000 to $950,000. The memorial consists of 109 intertwined stainless steel rods would “soar to 80 feet” above Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The news on the increase came Monday in a letter from an architect working for Frederick Schwartz, whose THINK team of architects was the runner-up for the redesign of the World Trade Center site. In it, architect Henry Rollmann said engineers who analyzed the design for the memorial’s 109 steel rods, which would rise like spokes from a circular granite base to form the 80-foot tower, concluded that the rods “would not be adequate to withstand the forces acting on them,” including gravity, without reinforcement. The memorial is to be built above Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. An article in Journal News on Feb. 15, 2005, notes the Westchester legislature is very exassberated with the cost overrun.
