Angels Circle WTC Memorial on Staten Island

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

Angels’ Circle, located on a traffic island at Fingerboard Road and Hylan Boulevard in Grasmere, memorializes about 170 Staten Islanders who were killed during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The memorial’s creator and caretaker is Wendy Pellegrino, a 2003 Advance Woman of Achievement.

Kathleen Dory & MaryAnn Ruggiero have an excellent history of the memorial noting that the traffic island before 911. Fresh Kills Staten Island World Trade Center Memorial

The winning design in a contest was Field Operations of New York and Philadelphia. The design calls for a meadow on an earth works at the crest of a hill (the landfill was closed just before the hill exceeded the New York City physical highpoint of 420 feet at Todt Hill on Staten Island — which in itself is the highest point on the Altantic Coast south of Maine). The design will have an almost crop circles appearance.

Staten Island 911 Wings Memorial
Staten Island dedicated its Wings 911 Memorial designed by Masayuki Sono of Kobe, Japan, in 2004 on the St. George Waterfront. It comprises two 40-foot postcards, stretching out like wings to the heavens. Plaques honoring 252 of the 271 borough residents and former Islanders killed in the attacks and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing line the inner sides of the structures. Each plaque, accompanied by a granite facial profile, includes the victim’s name, occupation and date of birth. There are 294 panels in all. The empty panels will be filled as more families give their consent to memorializing their loved ones, or as other Staten Island victims are identified in the future. The memorial cost $2 Million.
