APP reports The Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial Committee is planning a $950,000 memorial to be constructed at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands. The Memorial is attempting to $300,000 for the memorial. The board of Freeholders has committed $650,000. The committee held a groundbreaking ceremony for the memorial on Sept. 11, 2003, but has not yet erected the statute that pays tribute to the 147 county residents who died in terrorist attacks. Frank J. Tomaino, the committee chairman, said the committee originally planned to spend $1.3 million on the project, including the park renovations, but has been able to accomplish the same goal for less money. The marble base, with the names of the victims engraved on it, is already in place. The actual sculpture will be carved this year and dedicated on Sept. 11. At the center of the base will be a 9-foot-tall, 11-foot-wide eagle by Freehold sculptor Franco Minervini. In the eagle’s talons will be a steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center.
