The Engine 54 4 Truck Battalion 9 Firehouse on West 48th Street is the busiest firehouse in the city and suffered the worst loss on 9/11 — 15 firefighters.
This had a personal effect on me as this is my local firehouse. NYC is in reality a series of small towns. Although I did not know any of the firefighters personally, I was always aware of their smiling presence and talking to theatre visitor during their times the doors were open (the station’s motto is “Never Missed A Performance.” The station as perhaps the city’s most visible firehouse deserves its reputation as “Pride of Midtown.”
When you view the stations as smalltown stations, you can imagine the horror of having 75 small town fire stations all encountering the same horror on 9/11 as each lost at least one member.
To get a feel for how small town this station’s impact on the neighborhood take a look at this picture. by Angela Trotta Thomas.
Engine 54 has this memorial plaque that was erected in 2002 at the station at 48th and Eighth Avneue in New York. A memorial is across the street. I am awaiting details on the plaque.
