The Blake School in Duluth built a memorial stadium in 2002 in honor of Gordy Aamoth, Jr., who was killed in the attack. The south of the stadium is focused around “Spirit Rock,” a monumental stone split by a piece of structural steel that was once a part of the south tower of the World Trade Center where Gordy worked. The four-and-a-half-foot, 500-pound I-beam is a gift from New York City to the Aamoth family. Paving stones, equal in number to those who died in this tragedy, spiral out from “Spirit Rock” to create the plaza.

Staten Island dedicated its Wings 911 Memorial designed by Masayuki Sono of Kobe, Japan, in 2004 on the St. George Waterfront. It comprises two 40-foot postcards, stretching out like wings to the heavens. Plaques honoring 252 of the 271 borough residents and former Islanders killed in the attacks and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing line the inner sides of the structures. Each plaque, accompanied by a granite facial profile, includes the victim’s name, occupation and date of birth. There are 294 panels in all. The empty panels will be filled as more families give their consent to memorializing their loved ones, or as other Staten Island victims are identified in the future. The memorial cost $2 Million.

I started 911memorials.org because I thought somebody should try to chronical the various memorials and I saw no web site undertaking that. The outpouring was amazing after 911. This is admittedly a taunting task so there’s no formal road map on how to do this. Do you just include memorials with artifacts? Memorials with budgets in excess of a certain amount? Temporary memorials? My list is based more or less on the intention for the memorial to be permanent. It’s a very daunting task and I probably miss some sites. If you would like include a memorial or have pictures of a memorial or know of a website, drop me a line. I’ve had to turn off comments on this blog because it was getting hundreds of spam messages a day.
Voicesofsept11.org also is making the attempt. It is worth a visit also.

FLOW is to build Hoboken’s 911 Memorial on Pier A. Their design includes an island that extends off the northeast corner of the pier. The island would be moored and connected to Pier A by a small foot bridge. A large circular wind sculpture made of wire mesh would move with the breezes that blow down the Hudson.
