September 11 Memorial Grove on Kingman Island in Washington, DC
![]()
The September 11 Memorial Grove has some of the slickest websites of the various memorials. The concept commemorates the events of September 11, 2001 and the city’s efforts to restore the natural beauty of the Anacostia River and revitalize the surrounding neighborhood by celebrating nature, inviting and rewarding exploration and promoting efforts to create and maintain a healthy environment. The design engages the wetland as part of the experience of the island by creating a path that weaves through several distinct natural settings, ultimately connecting to the island’s greater pathway system. It is to be completed by 2006.
The press release notes:
“local memorial of national significance.” Goodinson also added that these memorials, as living memorials of trees, will “show Washington DC that there is a different way to memorialize, and it doesn’t have to be just hardscape.”
