20 Foot Beam in Rockland County Memorial at Hudson Bay Park
The Rockland Executive Reports Rockland County’s Memorial is to be at Hudson Bay Park. Visitors will enter the memorial area along a serpentine walkway bordered by stations of text displaying times and events that occurred September 11, 2001.
Key to the memorial design is a 20-foot beam from Tower Two. This beam sits upon a steel plate in the shape of Ground Zero, and the plate contains two “footprints” proportionate in size and shape to each of the Twin Towers. This part of the memorial is set in one corner with an adjacent expanse of empty space – portraying loss. This area is angled upward to lead a visitor to a corner wall – 20 feet on each side - displaying the names of the victims who either lived in or had ties to Rockland County. Names are displayed in a random fashion, thus encouraging visitors to recognize each individual lost. Standing at the wall, visitors will have an open view of the waters of the Hudson River. Diagonally across from the beam are three white structures symbolizing the buildings left standing beyond the expanse of emptiness. A circle of benches surrounds the monument and offers a view of an adjacent Patriot Garden.
Cal-Mart Construction donated services to clear the area for the memorial. Anyone wishing to discuss possible donations should contact Nancy Baker, Executive Project Coordinator at 845-638-5495. A Rockland County September 11th Memorial Fund has been established to receive monetary donations toward the construction and future maintenance of the memorial. Businesses, residents and organizations can contribute to the memorial by sending checks made out to the Rockland County Commissioner of Finance, 18 New Hempstead Road, New City, NY 10956.
