WTC Steel to Be in Tradition Field Memorial in St. Lucie
The Sun Sentinel reports a steel beam from the World Trade Center is to become part of a sculpture to be installed at the entrance to Tradition Field in St. Lucie West The steels is 12 inches tall, 15 inches long and 1ΒΌ inches thick and weighs 70 pounds. The St. Lucie Commissioners have budgeted $9,000 for the project. The memorial is scheduled to be dedicated at 11 a.m. March 30 before the Mets’ game with the Florida Marlins. The piece will be inserted into a sculpture by Pat Cochran, sculptor at Shadetree Studio in St. Lucie Village, that will feature two 8-foot, stainless-steel columns representing the twin towers of the World Trade Center. But rather than two simple, square columns, Cochran’s sculpture has wedges of steel jutting out from the towers at acute angles. The statue will be placed near the flagpoles in front of the stadium.
The Palm Beach Post notes the steel came from sections given to the 24 chapters of the New York Fire Department Retirees. Implementation of the memorial was delayed because of the two hurricanes.
Pat Cochran told us that the hurricanes also severely damaged his studio while he was building the memorial.
