Jersey City Memorial With WTC Steel on Waterfront With Postcard Views

Jersey City 911 Memorial
Jersey City’s waterfront has postcard views of Downtown NYC and its memorial dedicated in 2002 is simple and elegant.

It consists of a steel girder labeled #8 and a black granite plaque that reflects the New York skyline and lists all those from Jersey City who perished. The memorial is on Grand and Hudson on the River three blocks south of the Exchange Place PATH station.

The waterfront also has a 911 plaque attached to the Katyn Sculpture. A third memorial to be placed nearby in the J. Owen Grundy Park was rejected.

The Journal reported February 14, 2004, that Jersey City has rescinded its plan to build a 100 foot, nine-story WTC Memorial at the base of the pier at J. Owen Grundy Park. The sculpture entitled, “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism,” was donated by Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli and had been informally known as the “Tear of Grief” sculpture entitled, “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism,” was created by Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli and had been known as the “tear of Grief” Residents had complained the sculpture would block views of the city and that the memorial had been selected in secret nullifying an open memorial contest. Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega was quoted as saying, “This was not the place for it and the process for selecting the 9/11 memorial was flawed…This Russian artist wanted the best real estate in the city for his sculpture.” Vega pointed out that the city already has a 9/11 memorial at the foot of Grand Street on the waterfront walkway - a black granite monument that lists the names of the 39 Jersey City residents who perished in the attack. An attorney for Tsereteli declined comment noting the memorial had been completed in Russia and was awaiting shipment. Zurab Tsereteli’s website. Bayonne is to get the Tsereteli memorial
