The Rising World Trade Center Memorial in Westchester
The Journal News reports that the cost of the Westchester 911 Memorial has risen from $200,000 to $950,000. The memorial consists of 109 intertwined stainless steel rods would “soar to 80 feet” above Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The news on the increase came Monday in a letter from an architect working for Frederick Schwartz, whose THINK team of architects was the runner-up for the redesign of the World Trade Center site. In it, architect Henry Rollmann said engineers who analyzed the design for the memorial’s 109 steel rods, which would rise like spokes from a circular granite base to form the 80-foot tower, concluded that the rods “would not be adequate to withstand the forces acting on them,” including gravity, without reinforcement. The memorial is to be built above Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. An article in Journal News on Feb. 15, 2005, notes the Westchester legislature is very exassberated with the cost overrun.

Friday, February 4th, 2005

Monmouth County 911 Memorial
APP reports The Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial Committee is planning a $950,000 memorial to be constructed at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands. The Memorial is attempting to $300,000 for the memorial. The board of Freeholders has committed $650,000. The committee held a groundbreaking ceremony for the memorial on Sept. 11, 2003, but has not yet erected the statute that pays tribute to the 147 county residents who died in terrorist attacks. Frank J. Tomaino, the committee chairman, said the committee originally planned to spend $1.3 million on the project, including the park renovations, but has been able to accomplish the same goal for less money. The marble base, with the names of the victims engraved on it, is already in place. The actual sculpture will be carved this year and dedicated on Sept. 11. At the center of the base will be a 9-foot-tall, 11-foot-wide eagle by Freehold sculptor Franco Minervini. In the eagle’s talons will be a steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center.

Friday, February 4th, 2005

The Daily Breeze reports that the Manhattan (California) City Council has picked a design by Scott Yanofsky, Steve Oliker, Mark Brush and Studio 9One2 for their memorial. The memorial will consist of two 15 foot WTC columns be placed on top of a concrete pedestal in front of a new police and fire station at the southwest corner of 15th Street and Valley Drive. The design includes landscaping around the columns and a surfboard-shaped bench donated by the family of Chad Keller, a Manhattan Beach native and Bishop Montgomery High School graduate who died aboard Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on 9-11.
The budget for the memorial is $60,000
