911 Memorials Around the World

China: 911 Nirvana Rose

We have received this note about a Chinese art memorial. Here’s a powerpoint presentation on it.

My name is Wang Hong . I’m a professor at The China Academy of Art Hangzhou, and established the Hangzhou LIJI Institute of Chinese Lacquer Art,

My reason for writing to you is that the artists of China want to give a dedication for the 10th Anniversary of 911. A gesture of our understanding that such an event touches us all. I would like to give you a brief description of what the memorial will be made of and its deep symbolism.

First, the dedication will be a sculpture of the Twin Towers made of lacquer trays upon a black lacquered table(Enclosed are the plans for the dedication). All the trays will be open for the Anniversary to place the rose pedals in.

There will be another table where rose pedals can be placed in a tray anytime of the year.
The material as above mentioned will be traditional Chinese lacquer a 7000 years old medium .The colors will be black and red symbolic of the tragedy of 911. Black: destruction,desolation and loss. Red: the fire and the blood of those who have passed away.

However, these colors in Chinese tradition represent the hope for a brighter future. The Phoenix rising out of the ashes, which has always been the way of America.

Second ,the surface of the project will be polished to a smoothness that will be reminiscent of the touch of skin stirring deep emotions of those lost. So this dedication will be that of a visual and physical interaction.
Finally ,the third interaction will be the placement of rose pedals within the 220 trays. On each tray will be painted roses representing those who have passed away.

The 911deducation will take one year to complete. It will be handcrafted by 30 lacquer artists from the Institute of Chinese Lacquer Art (Hangzhou) including myself and an artist from Alaska USA ,Kathy Matta, who has been researching Chinese lacquer art for 11 years.
We hope you find an interest in this project we await in great anticipation for you reply.
Yours Sincerely;
Professor Wang Hong

  3. I know Kathy Matta personally and I am thrilled she is involved in this project. This will make a very nice memorial to the loss of lives of many people. I will look forward to the completion and delivery of this Memorial.

    It’s rose peTal–not peDal. Please correct the spelling on the PowerPoint of the Twin Towers.
